Ioun Stones

Wondrous Item, Rarity Varies (Requires Attunement)

Ioun Stones are marble-sized magical items named after Ioun, a god of knowledge and prophecy on some worlds. Each stone is a distinct combination of shape and color, and different types offer different magical benefits.

As a Magic action, you can toss an Ioun Stone into the air, causing it to orbit your head at a distance of 1d3 feet, granting its magical benefit. You can have up to three stones orbiting you at once. While orbiting, a stone is considered a worn object, automatically avoiding collisions and thwarting attempts to attack or seize it.

You can use a Utilize action to seize and stow any orbiting stones. If you end your attunement to a stone while it orbits you, the stone falls to the ground.

Each type of Ioun Stone has its own rarity and effect:

  • Absorption (Very Rare): Cancel spells of level 4 or lower as a Reaction. Cancels up to 20 total levels before burning out.
  • Agility (Very Rare): Dexterity increases by 2 (maximum 20).
  • Awareness (Rare): Advantage on Initiative rolls and Wisdom (Perception) checks.
  • Fortitude (Very Rare): Constitution increases by 2 (maximum 20).
  • Greater Absorption (Legendary): Cancel spells of level 8 or lower as a Reaction. Cancels up to 20 total levels before burning out.
  • Insight (Very Rare): Wisdom increases by 2 (maximum 20).
  • Intellect (Very Rare): Intelligence increases by 2 (maximum 20).
  • Leadership (Very Rare): Charisma increases by 2 (maximum 20).

  • Regeneration (Legendary): Regain 15 Hit Points at the end of each hour if you have at least 1 HP.
  • Reserve (Rare): Stores up to 4 spell levels. Stored spells can be cast using the original caster’s stats.
  • Strength (Very Rare): Strength increases by 2 (maximum 20).
  • Sustenance (Rare): You don’t need to eat or drink while it orbits your head.

Each Ioun Stone provides a significant magical boon, making them highly sought after by adventurers and scholars alike.
