One D&D Sorcerer Subclass Tier List

Full Subclass Tier List

The subclass rankings are based solely on other available subclasses within the same base class, not necessarily how they would perform in a game or compared to subclasses from other base classes. For a more holistic view on the power level of each subclass, reference the Full Subclass Tier List above.

A Tier

Wild Magic Sorcerer* – From a wacky fun subclass to a wacky powerful subclass, the Wild Magic Sorcerer has one of the best glow ups from 5e. While the previous Wild Magic table was super inconsistent, the new one is mostly neutral or upside meaning that every spell you cast has a solid chance of a good rider attached. It’s very easy to underestimate how powerful getting free effects are, so don’t sleep on this.

Divine Soul Sorcerer – Getting access to two spell lists starting from level 3 is absolutely excellent unsurprisingly. If that wasn’t enough, Favored by the Gods also helps you pass critical saving throws just in case getting two classes worth of spell lists wasn’t enough of an incentive.

B Tier

Clockwork Sorcerer* – In a very real sense, this is just a less versatile version of the Divine Soul Sorcerer. You get some of the spells that make the Divine Soul worthwhile, but you do get Wall of Force at level 9 which is pretty busted. Your other abilities are really nothing to be excited about, but they’re a thing.

Shadow Magic Sorcerer – A classic B tier option as every ability here is just good, no need to overcomplicate it sometimes.

C Tier

Draconic Sorcerer* – Receiving a little bit of a face lift from 5e, the Draconic Sorcerer has some nice perks in terms of how well it can survive with more health and a higher AC than any other Sorcerer on top of an elemental resistance. While defensively the Draconic Sorcerer is better then the others, it does leave a bit to be desired otherwise.

D Tier

Aberrant Sorcerer* – Telepathic Speech can be alright, your Expanded Spell list is decent, and Psionic Sorcery is pretty great, but that’s the extent of it. Your next two abilities come super late and aren’t particularly exciting making this a fine choice for your average campaign, just weaker than your other Sorcerer options.
