The Sorlock – Sorcerer/Warlock Multiclass Build Guide
Article Disclaimers
For all D&D guides on Nat1gaming, they only use the main sourcebooks (2024 Player’s Handbook, Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, Xanathar’s Guide to Everything) as well as Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos (mostly for Silvery Barbs) as those tend to be the most commonly used books at tables. Always be sure that if you’re following a guide that you’re adhering to your tables rules about what sourcebooks you are allowed to follow. Furthermore, be sure that you’re using the most current edition of the rules, especially as some 2024 Player’s Handbook rules are updates on Tasha’s or Xanathar’s rulings.
Any spell, class, feature, or other game item that is linkable on this website is covered by the 5th edition Open Games License and will be in the Player’s Handbook, but not everything in the Player’s Handbook will be linked to. All other materials that aren’t linked to are from other sourcebooks or aren’t allowed to be linked to per the 5th Edition Open Games License, so please refer to the appropriate sourcebooks for that information.
For spellcasters, you may notice substantial overlap between the spell lists of builds with the same base class. This is due to each guide utilizing a generically good spell list and not considering extenuating factors that will influence how you particularly sculpt your spell list. When creating your own spell list, you should take into account the campaign setting, what spells any other party members are capable of casting, potential overlap (ritual spells tend to overlap so it’s rare you need multiple people capable of casting them), or potential shortcomings in the parties total spell list. While this guide can definitely help point you in the right direction for crafting a spell list, you should use your judgement and preferences to figure out what spells make the most sense for your character.
To that end, please refer to the Spell List and Spell Tier list for any substitutions you’d want to make to the build.
Sorcerer/Warlock Spell Lists and Spell Tier Lists
Why Sorlock?
The classic Sorlock (Sorcerer/Warlock) multiclass is popular for doing one thing extremely well – hitting enemies with Eldritch Blast. Since this build specializes in maximizing the power and damage of this cantrip, it is incredibly consistent in fights as you always know your rough damage output and it’s not particularly resource reliant since you don’t need to use spell slots if you don’t want to, opting to just use Sorcery Points for extra blasts and extra damage. That said, this build has the flexibility to still be a full caster so you can cast spells when needed and Eldritch Blast when you don’t need to.
Overall, if you want to become a magical machine gun, this is the build for you.

Species: Aasimar
The best race for your average build. Human is a consideration as well to grab Alert on top of Musician, but Aasimar just give a lot of value, and since you have a background you’re happy with, Aasimar is the next best choice.
That being said, I should definitely mention Elf as a potential option here as you’ll have a fun interaction starting at level 6. Once Sorcerers get Font of Magic, they can convert spell slots into Sorcery Points. One of the main reasons people like playing Sorlock is because they can convert Warlock spell slots into Sorcery Points, short rest to refresh those spell slots, so you can do it again. So if during a long rest you go into your trance for 4 hours and still need to wait for the rest of your party, the is 4 hours of short rests you are technically afforded. Even if your short rest is interrupted, by the new rules, you party will need to extend the long rest by an hour to successfully complete it so that gives you another opportunity to short rest. If your DM is cool with this interaction which functionally grants you a buttload of free Sorcery Points every day, you 100% go Elf with whatever lineage suits your fancy as that is too strong of an interaction to pass up.

Like many other casters, you want your spellcasting ability (Charisma in this case), Dexterity (as no medium armor proficiency), and Constitution all as buffed as possible. Charisma empowers your spells while Dexterity and Constitution help keep you alive.
Proficiencies: Deception and Intimidation
Being able to pick up Charisma based skills for Warlocks is definitely ideal to make you better in RPing scenarios.
Background: Entertainer
You need a background that gives you a bonus to Charisma at a minimum, but if you can get the best Origin feat to boot? This is an easy choice for Warlocks.
Starting Equipment – Leather Armor, Sickle, 2 Daggers, Arcane Focus, Book (occult lore), Scholar’s Pack, and 15 gp + 50 gp from background
Functionally the only choices you’d make with starting equipment beyond taking the optional starting gold instead, but considering the starting gold won’t get you nearly this much, I recommend just choosing the standard fare.
Class – Warlock
Picking Warlock gives you two abilities from the get go: Pact Magic and Eldritch invocations.
Pact Magic is the Warlock way of casting spells which differs greatly from how every other class does it. While all casters have a prepared spell list they can draw from, Warlocks lack spell slots and instead can only cast a few spells per short or long rest at their highest possible strength for your level. To that end, choosing spells that are both high impact and ideally can be upcast in order to get their full usefulness.
The second feature you get immediately is Eldritch Invocations, special powers you get as you go up in Warlock levels. There are definitely strong options at this point, but the best one right now is Pact of the Chain. Find Familiar is the best first level ritual spell in the game, and getting a substantially better version of it is obviously really potent. While you have a lot of options, the best choices for a familiar are easily the Imp, Quasit, or Sphinx of Wonder with their damage resistances, flight, and in combat capabilities.
Starting Spells
SPELL LEVEL | SPELL NAME |
Cantrip | Eldritch Blast |
Cantrip | Light (Aasimar) |
Cantrip | Prestidigitation |
1st Level Spell | Find Familiar (Chain) |
1st Level Spell | Hex |
1st Level Spell | Hideous Laughter |
For Warlocks, this is going to pretty much always be the starting spell list I would recommend.
For damage, you have to use Eldritch Blast. This is going to be your primary offensive spell not just now, but for your entire campaign as it gets better as you level up. You can’t do better than this (technically True Strike on your Light Crossbow is stronger until level 5, but since you want to take Agonizing Blast next level, you can’t afford to not have Eldritch Blast for it).
For your secondary cantrip choice, you can take any utility cantrip you like, I just believe that Prestidigitation is a bit better than the rest as its versatility is truly unmatched. If you prefer Mage Hand or Minor Illusion, then feel free to take those instead!
Of course, you have one more cantrip as you’re an Aasimar and it’s Light. While not the most needed for you as you have darkvision, it could be helpful to allies who don’t have it, or even as a distraction of sorts still making it a reasonable option to have.
For spells, you can simply take the best first level spells available to Warlocks with Hex and Hideous Laughter.
Hex is a nice offensive spell that lets you deal extra damage to the cursed target, and when that target goes down, you can move it onto someone else! This is really good to use in pretty much any fight that may be difficult as that damage can easily add up round after round. Furthermore, even in later levels, this is going to be useful with your Eldritch Blast to really stack up the damage.
Hideous Laughter is just a solid CC spell that can lock down an enemy (or multiple) for potentially multiple rounds which can be useful until you can pick up Hypnotic Pattern.
On top of these spells, you also get the Find Familiar spell from your first Eldritch Invocation – Pact of the Chain. As mentioned one section ago, you get the option to pick from a lot of really excellent familiar choices like the Imp, Quasit, or Sphinx of Wonder making the already potent spell that much stronger.
The Build Level 2 Onward
Level 2-5
Level 2
Class: Warlock 2
Class Features: Magical Cunning, Agonizing Blast, Repelling Blast
Spell Change Log: + Expeditious Retreat
SPELL LEVEL | SPELL NAME |
Cantrip | Eldritch Blast |
Cantrip | Light (Aasimar) |
Cantrip | Prestidigitation |
1st Level Spell | Expeditious Retreat |
1st Level Spell | Find Familiar (Chain) |
1st Level Spell | Hex |
1st Level Spell | Hideous Laughter |
Level two brings you Magical Cunning, two new Eldritch Invocations, and a new spell to work with.
Your first new ability is Magical Cunning, where once per day, you can conduct a short ritual to regain half you spell slots. This would normally be excellent, but with so few spell slots, this obviously won’t end up doing too much, but free spell slots are still free spell slots.
Next you get two more Eldritch Invocations to work with, and since this class is all about Eldritch Blast, you can’t go wrong with Agonizing Blast and Repelling Blast to make it better. Agonizing Blast of course lets you add your Charisma modifier to the damage of Eldritch Blast, which by level 8, is functionally doubling the damage of it while Repelling Blast lets you push enemies away when you hit them with a beam of Eldritch Blast. Both excellent features we are happy to have.
For your spell choice, I like picking up Expeditious Retreat. This spell is pretty versatile as it’s great for escapes, but if you need to kite enemies around the battlefield, this is the way you’re going to do it.
Level 3
Class: Warlock 3 (Hexblade)
Class Features: Hexblade’s Curse Hex Warrior Expanded Spell List
Spell Change Log: + Shield (Hexblade) + Wrathful Smite (Hexblade) + Blur (Hexblade) + Shining Smite (Hexblade) + Suggestion
SPELL LEVEL | SPELL NAME |
Cantrip | Eldritch Blast |
Cantrip | Light (Aasimar) |
Cantrip | Prestidigitation |
1st Level Spell | Expeditious Retreat |
1st Level Spell | Find Familiar (Chain) |
1st Level Spell | Hex |
1st Level Spell | Hideous Laughter |
1st Level Spell | Shield (Hexblade) |
1st Level Spell | Wrathful Smite (Hexblade) |
2nd Level Spell | Blur (Hexblade) |
2nd Level Spell | Shining Smite (Hexblade) |
2nd Level Spell | Suggestion |
This level brings a lot to the table including your subclass, a new subclass feature, an expanded spell list, and second level spells.
The first ability you get with Hexblade is Hexblade’s Curse which is functionally a juiced up Hex spell as you get a wider critical range, comparable or more damage on average than Hex, and some health back when you kill the target. Obviously, this is a pretty solid ability.
The second ability you get is Hex Warrior which offers a lot and is the main reason Hexblade was one of the most popular multiclass dips. Crucially, you gain proficiency with medium armor, shields, and martial weapons which is obviously excellent. The second half of the ability lets you use your Charisma modifier for attack and damage rolls (which Pact of the Blade already does, but so it goes).
For your expanded spell list, you get to pick up Shield, Wrathful Smite, Blur, and Branding Smite.
The largest pickup for this expanded spell list is easily Shield. While Shield is not nearly as good on Warlocks as it is for other casters, being able to avoid a lot of damage by raising your AC can be invaluable in tougher fights.
Wrathful Smite is an awesome smite spell, but you personally are not going to use this.
Blur is a solid defensive option that makes it so enemies have disadvantage when attacking you, but this does eat up your Concentration. This is a decent option in the short term, but will be outclassed by later options.
Finally, you get Shining Smite, which again, you’re not going to use.
Finally, for your spell choice this level, you can pick up the excellent Suggestion. This spell is a powerhouse as it has excellent out of combat applications by forcing a course of action, but is similarly powerful in combat to make an enemy do something other than fight you! No matter what, you’re going to get mileage out of this spell. Unfortunately with few spell slots and no upcast potential, this isn’t sticking around forever, so be sure to enjoy it while it lasts.
Level 4

2nd Level Spell | Blur (Hexblade) |
2nd Level Spell | Mirror Image |
2nd Level Spell | Shining Smite (Hexblade) |
2nd Level Spell | Suggestion |
At this point, you would probably want to jump out of Warlock to start accumulating Sorcerer levels, but not getting your feat is a bit too brutal. If you decide to jump out at this point, you wouldn’t get your first feat until level 7 which is very brutal, so instead, you should grab it now to get 20 Charisma by level 8. That does mean that you aren’t gonig to ever get 9th level spells, so if you’re going to level 20, then you may not want to go to 4 levels in Warlock, However, if you’re ending the campaign earlier, then this is really not a concern.
For the feat, you can grab Inspiring Leader! Inspiring Leader gives you and your team a good amount of temporary health at the end of every short or long rest which is really powerful. If you already have an ally with this feat, you can opt for War Caster instead as the temporary health won’t stack. If you do keep this feat, don’t forget about using Musician as well!
Level 5
Class: Sorcerer 1 Warlock 4
Class Features: Innate Sorcery, Spellcasting
Spell Change Log: + Mage Hand + Minor Illusion + Mold Earth + Shape Water + Magic Missile + Silvery Barbs

Warlock | 2nd Level Spell | Mirror Image |
Warlock | 2nd Level Spell | Shining Smite (Hexblade) |
Warlock | 2nd Level Spell | Suggestion |
Finally you get to start taking levels in Sorcerer and you’re going to take Sorcerer for the rest of your level ups.
Something important to note is that you now get your second beam of Eldritch Blast as it scales off of total level, not Warlock level.
Sorcerers get two inherent features at level one: Innate Sorcery and Spellcasting.
Innate Sorcery is a new feature from the 2024 Player’s Handbook, you can activate this twice per day as a bonus action to increase your spell save DC by 1 and to give yourself advantage on all your spell attack rolls. Save this for tough fights and this will be extremely helpful, especially for spells that require a spell attack.
Spellcasting has also been vastly improved for Sorcerer now that you both get to prepare spells rather than memorize them and you get to prepare significantly more spells than you could ever memorize from the 2014 rules.
For your spells, you get Mage Hand, Minor Illusion, Mold Earth, Shape Water, Magic Missile, and Silvery Barbs.
For cantrips, you just want the best utility cantrips afforded to you and I think these are it. If you want different ones, go nuts as it doesn’t matter much since your attack cantrip is covered.
For your spell choices, I really like Magic Missile and Silvery Barbs.
Magic Missile is the best first level damage spell in the game, so you may as well grab it! While it’s obviously not the strongest at this level, sometimes you need to deal the final bits of damage to a target.
Silvery Barbs is obviously a brutal spell as you get to force someone to reroll and give advantage to someone’s next roll which is obviously very strong for a first level spell.

Warlock | 2nd Level Spell | Blur (Hexblade) |
Warlock | 2nd Level Spell | Mirror Image |
Warlock | 2nd Level Spell | Shining Smite (Hexblade) |
Warlock | 2nd Level Spell | Suggestion |
Your first class feature is Font of Magic which introduces Sorcery Points into the mix. Sorcery Points are your resource to either give you more spell slots or used to fuel Metamagic features!
Your second feature is the most emblematic Sorcerer features, Metamagic! I will always recommend taking the two best Metamagic features immediately – Heightened Spell and and Quickened Spell. Heightened Spell is excellent to make any spell with saving throws much harder for enemies to pass, especially useful for spells that have no effect if the enemy passes the save. Quickened Spell, on the other hand, does as advertised and lets you cast a spell as a bonus action if you need to do something else with your action. For Sorlocks in particular, this is mainly going to be used to double up on Eldritch Blasts for a turn which is really strong and the main reason you’re pairing Sorcerers and Warlocks.
For your spells, I like picking up Absorb Elements and Feather Fall.
Absorb Elements is really good to not get obliterated by a large amount of elemental damage which is going to become more and more common as you climb in levels.
Feather Fall, on the other hand, is just a great spell to have in case you are plummeting to your doom!

Warlock | 2nd Level Spell | Suggestion |
You now get your subclass – Shadow Magic!
Shadow Magic brings two new abilities to the table with Eyes of the Dark and Strength of the Grave.
The first ability is Eyes of the Dark which simply means an improved Darkvision and getting Darkness for free which is pretty nice!
Strength of the Grave is yet another excellent subclass feature that may save your life once per day, somewhat similarly to a Barbarian‘s Relentless Rage.
Both are very simple, but quite strong features!
For your spells, I like grabbing Misty Step and Web.
Misty Step is an awesome as a repositioning tool in a pinch, simple and effective.
Web, on the other hand, is going to be a spell you’re casting constantly to create some difficult terrain and potentially ensare enemies on top of it. This is really effective and will remain effective even in higher levels.

Level 8 brings your second feat and you should pump your Charisma to 20. Having the most effective spells possible is really good, especially with Agonizing Blast.
For your spells, you pick up a new cantrip in Message and a new spell in Invisibility.
You already have so many good cantrips at this point, Message is one of the few cantrips yet that seems useful and you don’t already have it.
For your spell choice, I like grabbing Invisibility. It’s a solid utility spell that can allow you to sneak into places, out of places, or surprise enemy in combat.

Warlock | 2nd Level Spell | Shining Smite (Hexblade) |
Warlock | 2nd Level Spell | Suggestion |
For your class ability, you get what was formerly the level 20 Sorcerer ability – Sorcerous Restoration. Rather than regaining 4 sorcery points per long rest, once per day, you can recover half of your sorcery points instead. While this is obviously a weaker ability, it’s ironically not substantially weaker than the previous ability! Obviously this isn’t going to recover too many right now, but as you climb in levels, this is only going to get better and better.
For your actual spell choices, I like picking up Counterspell and Hypnotic Pattern.
Even though it’s been a little nerfed, Counterspell is still invaluable for every caster to have. To potentially deprive the enemy of their action only at the cost of your reaction is incredibly powerful.
For your second spell, you have to pick up Hypnotic Pattern. While I generally have a slight preference for Fireball, Hypnotic Pattern is likely the better spell and works better in this build as it synergizes extremely well with Hound of Ill-Omen next level. An excellent spell synergizing with an excellent ability is a recipe for success.

Warlock | 2nd Level Spell | Suggestion |
You get your third subclass feature with Hound of Ill-Omen. This is a super unique feature which functionally summons a specter wolf that only has eyes for a single target. This wolf can go through walls, attack that target, and even give them disadvantage on saving throws which is really powerful! Lastly, you can summon multiple at once if you have the sorcery points making it so your AOE CC works against multiple targets!
For spells, I really like picking up Dispel Magic. You won’t always be able to Counterspell a scary magical effect, so having both is a really good way to cover your bases.

Level 11 brings your next beam of Eldritch Blast, which in a class that cares about blasting, is pretty important.
For your spell choice, you absolutely have to take Polymorph the second you are allowed to. Polymorph is simply one of the best spells in the game, and it’s particularly good at getting yourself or allies back into a fight when you/they are low on health, spell slots, or other relevant resources. Going from near dead into a Giant Ape or Tyrannosaurus Rex is quite nice!

You get your next feat for level 12, and I like taking Speedy to increase your Constitution and speed! Having extra speed and enemies having disadvantage on hitting you with opportunity attacks can be life saving in tough encounters where you’re getting mobbed and can’t afford to Misty Step.
For your spell choice, I really like picking up the excellent Wall of Fire! Good range, amazing AOE coverage, and solid damage make this a really potent spell for any encounter.

You get fifth level spells finally and you’re grabbing Dimension Door (not a fifth level spell, I know) and Synaptic Static.
Dimension Door is one of the best teleportation spells in the game as you can get pretty far without even seeing your destination, something generally reserved for higher level spells. Since you can also take someone with you, this is excellent for infiltrations, escapes, or repositioning on a big battlefield with a friend.
Synaptic Static is an awesome blast spell that does ok damage, but you’re really after it for the brutal debuff that comes along with it.

Level 10 brings another metamagic feature, your final cantrip, and another spell!
For your third Metamagic feature, I personally like Subtle Spell. Being able to spellcast without giving away that it’s you casting the spell can be really powerful in situations where you need to be covert. Furthermore, many anti-magic measures like Counterspell or Dispel Magic don’t work against Subtle Spell giving additional utility there.
For your spell choice, you can’t go wrong with Arcane Hand. This smacks, grapples, protects, does your taxes, whatever you need. It is super versatile and still a great option even at this level.

Level 17 means seventh level spells!
While it’s a shame to part with old reliable, I believe it’s time to swap out Magic Missile to get two seventh level spells immediately – Crown of Stars and Teleport.
I like getting both of these spells immediately as they have wildly different use cases.
Crown of Stars is a damage spell that can be set up ahead of time, requires no concentration, and deals pretty solid damage making it an awesome option for a tougher encounter.
Teleport, on the other hand, is going to be used mostly for long distance travel, but also as an escape option some amount of the time. Having both means your seventh level slot wouldn’t be languishing waiting for the opportunity to Teleport as you’d pick that over Crown of Stars if you didn’t swap anything out.

You now have access to eighth level spells, and the clear winner for all your Heightened spell needs is Dominate Monster. While this is an inherently risky spell to cast, getting two attempts at this one way or another (giving the target disadvantage on the saving throw) is really powerful. You do have to be careful about Legendary Resistances at this point, but if you don’t believe the monster you’re dealing with has them, this can instantly end an encounter and give you a new buddy for an hour!

You get your final feat and you can now take Epic Boons! To that end, the generic best of the bunch for non-martial characters is always going to be Boon of Fate. Being able to potentially turn a failure into a success and vice versa, even if it’s once per short or long rest, can be the difference between surviving an encounter and not.
